An exciting opportunity has come up for an Internal Legal Counsel for immediate start.

Company Overview

Insurance Solutions Providers is a specialist insurance claims and accident management organisation that handles claim assessments, dispute resolution and legal management for property, motor vehicle, and other insurance disputes. The Internal Legal Counsel will play a central role in guiding the company’s legal strategy, representing the organisation’s interests in litigation and regulatory matters, managing risk, and working closely with external legal advisers.

Position Summary

The Internal Legal Counsel (Solicitor) is responsible for delivering comprehensive legal support to the business. This includes advising on insurance and commercial law matters, preparing and reviewing legal documentation, coordinating litigation and dispute resolution (including court appearances where necessary), and managing relationships with external law firms and regulatory bodies. The role requires a proactive legal adviser who can balance strategic business objectives with strong technical legal expertise.


Benefits

Salary: $76,515 to $90,000 plus Super depending on experience 


Task & responsibilities

Key Responsibilities

1.    Legal Advice & Strategic Support

•    Provide clear, practical and commercially astute legal guidance to senior management on regulatory compliance, insurance law, contract interpretation, risk exposures, and corporate governance matters.

•    Interpret relevant statutes, case law and regulatory instruments that impact insurance operations, claims handling and dispute management.

2.    Claims Litigation & Court Representation

•    Lead preparation for legal disputes involving insurance claims, including the compilation of evidence, legal research, drafting submissions and coordinating witness preparation in anticipation of legal proceedings.

•    Represent the company or coordinate representation in hearings, tribunals and courts where necessary, ensuring effective advocacy consistent with organisational interests.

•    Liaise with external counsel regarding litigation strategy, fee arrangements, milestones and file management.

3.    Document Drafting & Review

•    Draft, review and negotiate a wide range of legal documents including contracts, service agreements, indemnities, policy schedules and settlement agreements, ensuring clarity, enforceability and alignment with business risk tolerances.

•    Prepare legal correspondence, internal advisories, legal opinions, and formal notices in connection with claims and disputes.

4.    Contract Management

•    Assess and manage contractual arrangements with third parties, service providers and business partners, including identifying legal risk, recommending changes and overseeing execution.

•    Develop, update and maintain legal templates, precedents and internal guidance materials for consistent use across the business.

5.    Regulatory & Compliance Oversight

•    Monitor changes in legal and regulatory frameworks affecting insurance and financial services; evaluate impacts and advise on necessary compliance actions or policy adjustments.

•    Assist with internal audits, compliance reviews and risk assessments, proposing legal risk mitigations and compliance frameworks where relevant.

6.    External Counsel & Stakeholder Engagement

•    Manage engagement with external law firms and counsel, setting expectations, tracking performance, approving legal costs and ensuring work is completed efficiently and to high standards.

•    Foster collaborative relationships with policyholders, brokers, regulators and industry stakeholders while safeguarding company interests.

7.    Legal Research & Investigations

•    Conduct detailed legal research on complex legal issues, potential liabilities, and precedents to inform strategic decision-making and litigation approaches.

•    Lead internal investigations into potential breaches, disputes or emerging claims trends that may have legal or financial repercussions.

8.    Other General Counsel Duties

•    Provide support and legal training to internal teams on legal best practices, contractual obligations, and risk mitigation techniques.

•    Undertake other duties as directed that are consistent with the level and responsibilities of this position.


Qualification & experience

Essential Criteria

•    Bachelor of Laws (LLB) or Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited institution. 

•    Admission to practice as a Solicitor in NSW 

•    Current practising certificate from the relevant Law Society or Legal Services Board

•    At least 12 months of demonstrated experience across multiple areas of law

Skills & Competencies

•    Strong legal analysis, advocacy and negotiation skills.

•    Excellent drafting, documentation and written communication abilities.

•    Ability to provide strategic legal advice that balances risk and business objectives.

•    Competent in managing multiple legal matters concurrently with sound judgment under pressure.

•    Effective stakeholder management and collaboration skills, both internally and externally.
